Review: Terry Pratchett’s Mort

Duck In A Hat
Augustine’s Church until August 28th

“It would be a bloody stupid world if people got killed without dying, wouldn’t it?”

A hilarious adaptation of a Terry Pratchett novel, Duck in a Hat Theatre’s Mort chills and thrills. The story of a poor boy who is apprenticed to death himself and finds that he is a little too compassionate for such a morbid occupation. It’s not that people die, it’s that the wrong people die. Innocent people are killed! Their evil exploiters get rich and powerful! Mort can’t stand it. While Death takes a holiday, rebels! When he saves the life of an assassinated Princess – well sort of – the universe doesn’t quite know what to do with her. What magic can save her from her doom? Mort seeks to find out.

This is a funny show with good performances. Despite being completely cloaked from head to foot, Death’s body language is great! Despite having his voice distorted his deliver is spot on. One thing that struck a bit odd is that a wizard, played by a female actress, wasn’t simply recast as a witch.

The play culminates in an Epic Battle and ends happily ever after. Terrifically Entertaining!
